I went looking at new TVs yesterday and noticed that the pictures on screen look pixelated and fuzzy on even the highest quality (and price) TVs .
Am I seeing something nobody else is? My 8 yo TV has a clearer view and no 'fuzzies' .
HDTVs are definitely higher resolution than older standard definition sets. But there are a couple of caveats.

Some stores do not provide a high quality signal to their TVs. They hook up too many TVs to the same document and end up with a degraded signal. Some even have the TVs tuned to non-SD channels (really, I've seen this!). Stores that cognize what they're doing will often have the TVs hooked up to a BluRay player, which's currently the highest quality input.

BTW, RC Willey seems to know what they are doing with HDTVs. The TVs in their showrooms are well set up and their sales staff is *very* knowledgeable, unlike some other major retailers I know. If they are in your area, check them out.

Also, if you're looking at a 55 inch TV, don't stand 4 feet in front of it. It's bound to look fuzzy. They should be viewed from a distance that is 2 to 3 times the screen diagonal.

If the HDTVs are fed SD images then this could well happen. SD images are 4:3 in aspect ratio and 720x486 in resolution. But your HDTV is going to be 16:9 in aspect ration and 1280x720 (or something close to that) or 1920x1080 in resolution. So you have a discrepency between the two. As a happen some form of up-scaling and/or distortion will occur. This will in turn cause a big of softening of the image. Its different in each case and the severity of image degrade will vary.

But an old CRT (tube) set is a SD aspect ration and resolution. So it will playback SD content vastly better. The HDTVs can not match the CRT in SD playback.

But HD vs SD, HD is way sharper and better looking. Watch a new visual effects heavy movie in BluRay and on a standard DVD. The BluRay is clearly a step above. But as we transition things from SD to HD, there's going to be still SD stuff around or stuff that is exclusively so-so processed for HD which just won't look that great. Its just part of the landscape we have to deal with.

Plans For Building a Homemade Deer Feeder...

Feeding wild deer has become a very favorite hobby as well as over the years my company has literally provided tens of thousands of these feeders. It is not uncommon for us to receive requests from woodworkers and others who wish to build their own feeders. Unlike most companies, we are glad to help anyone wishing to make their own homemade feeder since often times we receive replies from these same individuals with ideas for improvements, or more than likely early product ideas.
To build your own 36" trough style deer feeder in the Hurley-Byrd fashion you first need to gather some materials. You will need lumber of course and all Hurley-Byrd Deer Feeders are crafted from western red cedar. You are welcome to use pine but only expect it to last a couple of years. Purchase one 1x8 piece of lumber that is eight feet long and a 2x4 with a minimum length of three feet. Keep in mind each piece of lumber will need to be ripped to narrow widths. Some lumber yards will be glad to assist if you do not have the tools capable of performing this task. While at the lumber store, purchase 14-#8x1 1/2" wood screws. We use brass screws in your feeders but any good wood screw will be fine for a short term feeder. Also purchase four 1/4" x 20 x 3" carriage bolts, matching wing nuts and washers. These are used to attach the legs to the trough.

Once the lumber is home, it's time to build the vee shaped trough. Cut your 1x8 into 2-36" lengths. Leave one piece its full 71/4" width and rip the other to 6 1/2". Take the remaining two feet of the 1x8 and rip it to 3 3/4" in width. This piece of lumber must be cut into two triangles with a miter saw. Since these four pieces of lumber get attached to one another at their edges, screw holes must be drilled first or the lumber will soon split. On the 1x7 1/4"x 36, drill two holes at each end 3/8" from the end and 1 1/2" from the sides. Along one long edge, drill six equally spaced holes 3/8" from the edge. On the 1x6 1/2"x 36, drill two holes in each end 3/8" from the end and 1 1/2" from the sides. Take the two triangles and drill two 5/8" diameter holes perpendicular to the short point that are located 1" and 2 1/4" from the long flat edge.

Now that the lumber has its screw holes in place, it is time for assembly. Lay the 1x6 1/2" board on a flat work bench so that one edge is close to the bench's end. Stand the 1 x 7 1/4" on its edge next to the 1x6 1/4 so the screw holes are closest to the bench and aligned with the 1x6 1/4. Secure the bigger piece of lumber to the smaller one using the wood screws producing sure the ends of each board align with one another. Once all the screws are in place, turn the trough over and set it on one the triangles so that the triangle sets flush with the trough's end. It's a good practice to predrill the screw holes for the triangle using the holes you antecedently drilled in the long length lumber. This will keep your triangles from splitting or breaking prematurely. Attach each triangle to the trough. Drill out four 5/8" drain holes in the trough's vee bottom. Your trough is now complete and able to be sanded if desired or left rough but we suggest a little sanding to remove any sharp edges.

Now it's time for the legs. Gather up your 2x4 and cut it to 36" in length and rip it into two equal halves. Using the triangles as your guide, drill two 5/8" holes in one end of the leg on its center line. Each hole will be 1" and 2 1/4" from the top of the leg respectively. Once you have done this, you could apply an exterior grade finish to the whole feeder or leave the lumber raw. We use a high grade penetrating oil finish to enhance the feeder's beauty and add longevity to the feeder. If you apply a finish, allow it to dry appropriately and you are now ready to set out the new feeder.

To set the feeder outside, you will need to attach the legs to the trough using the carriage bolts, washers and wing nuts. Once it is assembled, it is time to set it up. For this type of feeder, you will need to dig two holes 12" deep and 36" apart. Once complete, stand the feeder in the holes and backfill the holes enough to hold the feeder. Stand back, look at the feeder and level it in all directions. Once level, completely backfill the holes and tamp down the fresh dirt. Fill your feeder and within a few days you will start enjoying the deer on a regular basis. Read my previously mentioned article regarding safe feeding locations and proper feeds for your deer. LCD TV Problems - How You Can Fix Them Fast...

There are many reasons you could be having problems with your LCD TV. The thing to remember is that these things are microprocessor based, just like your computer. That means that at the first sign of trouble you should do the same thing you do with your computer; reboot it! That's right, if your LCD TV is dead ir unresponsive, turn it off with the remote or power button, delay about 10 seconds, then unplug it from the wall. After about 1 minute, plug the power back in as well as turn the TV on again. With any luck, your TV is now fixed. The next thing that causes problems with completely new TVs, not just LCDs is the HDMI connection.
You see, HDMI is a fantastic way to get high definition video, but it's so good that the content providers were worried their stuff would end up out on the Internet in pure form, well-to-do to copy and distribute. To preclude such an occurrence, a copy protection scheme called High Density Copy Protection (HDCP) was developed. This is an electronic data handshake system where the document and display devices have to recognize every different and agree that it's okay to send video. If there is no handshake, or the process gets corrupted in several way, poof, no more video. This problem was extremely prevalent in the early days of HDMI, but has been steadily improving since about the end of 2007 or early 2008.

If you are having problems with your TV, it may actually be an HDMI related issue. Here are many of the problems you may encounter.

Problem 1: No Picture
If you see, or rather don't see this, then shut everything down and then restart the system. Make sure all the connections are in place first. Look at the screen. If you see a resolution notice chances are the DDC line has communicated between source and sink. Good news for you! The problem is probably video related.

Problem 2: Flashes, No Audio, Pink Screen
No audio accompanied by a pink screen is usually indicative of a DDC communication problem. What's that mean for you? To check this, power up the system while all the HDMI cables are connected. If possible, try using shorter cables. Here you need to see if the system works at all. If for some think the system still fails to come on, try using different inputs. You may find that your cable box will work and your DVD may not or vice versa. This able to happen caused by stray capacitance on the DDC line inside the HDMI cable. This may actually be caused by the hardware itself. If you think it may be, try getting a DDC line conditioner. Normally, these types of problems completely go away when conditioning is introduced.

Problem 3: Sparkles in the Picture
This is normally a video data transmission problem. Typically data transmission problems with HDMI are cable related. It could be that the cable is underperforming due to its length. This is especially frequent with cheap cables. Remember the HDMI spec says cable length should not exceed 10 meters. Shortening the cable should improve the signal integrity. Another possibility in this situation is a bad connector. HDMI connectors are notoriously fickle anyway.Try a new cable at each position along the signal path.

Symptom 4: Picture Comes On, Then Goes Off
Typically, this is caused by one of two things. The first is when one or more of the video TMDS channels has a high bit error rate or is not working at all. Next is when the DDC line does not quite make it. In that case, the HDCP is not getting a new refresh key. Buy a in a better quality cable with larger wire. When it comes to wire gauge, smaller gauge equals larger wire diameter. Hence 20 gauge is larger diameter than 24 gauge.

How to Guide - Connecting Your Laptop to HDTV Or TV...

I'm writing this guide after being asked a couple of times on ways to connect a laptop to a TV. People want to achieve this for many reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's convenient for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching DVDs, and it's now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and different high definition content on the HDTV.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the TV.

* If you have an HDTV with HDMI inputs, check if your laptop has an HDMI output. If it does, you're in luck! Your HDTV able to show from your laptop in HD resolutions. All you need is an HDMI cable to connect them. If your HDTVs HDMI inputs are used up already. An HDMI switch would be the best solution for you. We supply switches that could connect up to 5 different HDMI sources to 1 HDMI input.
* If you do not have an HDMI output on the laptop, check if it has a DVI output. Some ASUS, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you could connect your laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI to DVI cable. They are both digital cables so this'll produce the same HD resolutions as a standard HDMI cable.
* If your laptop does not have HDMI or DVI out, it should have a VGA output. Connecting with VGA is capable of high resolutions. However, different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You must check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA.
* Pretty much completely laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will certainly do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your TV. If not, you must go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your TV to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having hurt getting your TV to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can choose to output it to your TV, or blast it from your house theater audio receiver.

* The best way to connect audio to your TV or receiver is through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optical audio cable will work great for crisp high quality audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optical audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/PDIF) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still want that high quality sound. Don't worry! You can still get an external (USB) sound card that has digital coaxial out or optical out. I recommend the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090 with Toslink Optical audio out.
* Another way, which won't require any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the RCA (red and white) inputs on your TV or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 RCA adapter with a 2 RCA audio cable.
